IN THE PREMIER CRU VINEYARDS OF CHAMPAGNE FRESNE DUCRET

Pierre Fresne has always been curious, and passionate about producing work of which he can be proud. This quest for excellence has pushed him to explore new horizons, testing and experimenting in both the vineyards and the winery. He invites you to follow him on his journey to the heart of Villedommange’s terroir.

SOIL COMPOSITION, CHAMPAGNE FRESNE DUCRET’S FINEST ASSET

The vineyards of Champagne Fresne Ducret reflect several centuries of history. The composition of the subsoil is a veritable palette, where each stratum represents a bygone era. From parcel to parcel, proportions of chalk, sand and clay vary, and have a significant influence on the vines that grow on the parcels and on the grapes that grow on the vines. From 2016, Pierre began to have in-depth soil analysis carried out, which allows him to adapt his methods to specific soil types and thus improve the quality of the soil.

IN SEARCH OF LOST GRAPE VARIETIES

As part of his constant quest for creation and his effort to bring together different worlds, Pierre took an interest in ancestral methods of viticulture early in his career and rediscovered the rare grape varieties of Champagne. In 2015, after much research and contemplation, he set his sights on Petit Meslier, and planted a parcel of ¼ acre. This white grape variety will bring freshness, finesse, and complexity to future cuvees.

RESTORING THE VINEYARDS

Pierre Fresne belongs to a new generation of winemakers, conscious of the environment and keen to preserve the land that has sustained his family for so long. In line with this philosophy, he has taken a number of measures to transform his approach to winegrowing and winemaking : when he took over in 2007, he began reducing the amount of products used in his vines and planting grass between the rows of vines ; he reintroduced ploughing in 2013 ; and in 2018 he began his conversion to organic viticulture.
